Below is a sample chapter from Turkish Biographies 1.

SAIT FAIK Sait Faik 1906’da Adapazarı’nda doğdu. Liseyi İstanbul’da okudu. Lisede öyküler ve yazılar yazdı. Onun ilk öyküsü “İpekli Mendil”di. Sonraki yıllarda Sait Faik çok ünlü bir öykücü oldu.

Sait Faik 1928’de liseyi bitirdi. Liseden sonra 1930’da Lozan’a gitti. Lozan’da ekonomi okumak istiyordu. Ama orada sadece on beş gün kaldı. Daha sonra Fransa’ya gitti. Fransa’da 1933’e kadar yaşadı.

Sait Faik 1933’te Türkiye’ye döndü. Bir süre bir Ermeni okulunda öğretmen olarak çalıştı. Daha sonra bir tüccar oldu. Fasulye aldı ve sattı. Ama başarılı bir tüccar değildi. Bu yüzden, kısa bir süre sonra iflas etti.

Sait Faik’in babası Mehmet Faik Bey 1939’da öldü. Ondan sonra Sait Faik gerçek bir iş yapmadı. Hayatı boyunca yazı yazdı. 171 öykü ve 2 roman yazdı; yaklaşık 50 tane röportaj yaptı.

Sait Faik Abasıyanık Adapazarı’nda, Bursa’da, İstanbul’da ve Burgazada’da yaşadı. 1954’te Burgazada’da öldü. Yıllar sonra onun evi bir müze oldu.

• The student read the text aloud and the instructor corrects his pronunciation mistakes (Reading & pronunciation).
• The instructor and the student do the comprehension exercise together (Speaking).
• The student writes the text with his own words and the instructor corrects it in class or outside the class (Writing).

As you see taking a reading class is not only good for reading and conversation, but also vocabulary, listening, pronunciation and writing.
